We had Cabo planned. Then John Summit announced Vail.

Savvy Spender Newsletter

Hey Reader,

We had our wedding anniversary trip planned.

Cabo.

Warm weather.

Beach.

Relaxing.

We were locked in about six months out.

Then three months before the trip John Summit announced his Experts Only event in Vail, Colorado.

If you don't know John Summit he's one of the biggest DJs in the world and this was a private ski weekend experience.

His music, the mountain, and about ten of our friends who were all suddenly talking about going.

In cash terms this would have been a painful decision.

We'd already committed to Cabo.

Changing meant either eating a loss or having a very uncomfortable conversation about what we'd already booked.

But our trip was on points.

So I looked at what Grand Hyatt Vail was going for that weekend.

Same number of points as the Cabo hotel.

I called Chase and extended my Hyatt free night certificate.

Something most people don't know you can do and used it for a suite upgrade with free breakfast at a ski-in ski-out lodge.

I booked direct flights from Charlotte to Vail on American Airlines miles.

Total financial penalty for switching from Cabo to Vail for our wedding

anniversary?

Zero.

We ended up at the Grand Hyatt Vail during one of the most memorable weekends we've had.

We met John Summit.

Ten friends all there together.

Over $12,000 in hotel value covered by points.

This is what I mean when I say points don't just save money.

They give you the freedom to say yes when something better comes along — without losing what you already had.

That trip did something else too.

Something I didn't fully anticipate.

Talk soon,

Ross

Itinerary Boss Insider Hey Reader, (⏱️ 100‑sec read) This past weekend was packed with family, friends, and points‑and‑miles conversations. 🏡 We spent time with some commercial real estate and real estate service business owners, talking through how to turn their everyday spend into free flights & hotels. The weekend ended with a quick trip through Dulles, where we enjoyed Etihad’s Priority Pass Lounge (also a Sapphire Lounge) a nice perk for Sapphire cardholders passing through IAD. 🎉 A...
